. complete bay area news coverage starts right now. this is the 10:00 on ktvu channel 2. when will it end? another bay area freeze warning and this time, snow has reached the bay area. good evening, i'm ken wayne. heather holmes is off tonight. the bay area is bracing for yet another freeze warning tonight as the region prepares form another cold night. here is some live pictures looking at san francisco. where it's 41 and in oakland, where it's 36 degrees. last night's rain turned into a snow event in the higher

elevations with the light blanket of snow on bay area mountaintops. this is the view from newscopter 2 over mount hamilton in the south bay. the snow extended coin to the santa cruz mountains. squaw valley reported 20" of fresh powder on slopes. fall throwing down to the 1400' level. chains are required traveling through el dorado county. we have team coverage and begin with ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo. >> ken we had a bit of a break because that storm mixed things up a bit, but with the cold air already moving in, temperatures are dropping off already this saturday evening. right now i'm showing you all of the areas shaded in purple here, areas under a hard freeze warning or a freeze warning that does include a good portion of the bay area. that is in place until tomorrow morning at 9:00. you can see the reason why, as we zoom in and take a look at

of the current numbers updated for the 10. >> 10:00 hour. 36 degrees in livermore, antioch, 35, freezing in fairfield. 3degrees in a few more low 30s into napa and santa rosa. so all of these neighbors will be back into the 20s first thing tomorrow morning. san francisco 41 and sfo checking in right now at 42 degrees. with the relatively clear skiing and clearing skies overnight, the drop in temperature pattern will continue. as a result, first thing tomorrow morning, coming up at at 10:35, we'll also break down the coldest morning of the week, tomorrow we will not be the cold yet. we'll have that answer coming up and when temperatures will be trending upward once again that is coming up at 10:35. >> thank you, mark. the frigid temperatures this morning are to blame for at least one death, possibly two in the bay area.

the highway patrol says icy roads contributetoid deadly traffic accident just before 8:00 this morning on highway 101 healdsburg. investigators say a 52-year-old santa rosa woman after her truck crashed into a grove of trees. a homeless man was found dead in dublin this morning. authorities say he may have died from exposure. a family of four and two cats escaped a house fire in el sobrante. the damage is estimated to be $65,000 and is mostly confined to the garage and the living room. nobody was hurt. investigators say preliminary findings show discarded fireplace ashes may have caused that fire. our team coverage continues on the weather now with ktvu's patsi lee in walnut creek where a makeshift shelter has filled up ahead of tonight's freezing temperatures. >> reporter: the decision to allow homeless guests to spend the night here was made just a few hours ago,

because this building is actually not a shelter. it's just providing it with cots borrowed from the red cross, just for this emergency situation. to escape the cold, more than a dozen people are spending night at trinity center, which works with homeless in walnut creek. >> we just made the decision that we needed to do something, because there was nothing else. >> reporter: dianna colombo explains that the center is normally open a few hours, but since tuesday it is staying open all night. >> there are not a lot of options in an emergency situation like this. >> i'm glad i discovered this place because before that i was freezing and walking around at night with nowhere to go and i was on the verge of doing. >> freezing temperatures pose danger for nearly everyone. last night haze rain was a threat of black ice. >> it's extremely hazardous because most drivers don't see it until it's too late. >> reporter:

that is one reason this pearl harbor ceremony was moved off diablo summit. >> it would have made it dangerous for people driving up and down the road. they were glad that they were able to change the venue. >> even if there wasn't snow, there would have been all that of wind and it would be freezing. >> reporter: even cozying up to a fireplace won't be an option starting at midnight when a spare the air no-burn warning doesn't end for 24 hours. the timing couldn't be worse on one of the coldest nights of the year. faves trying to stay warm have been told to forget the firewood and on the other end of spectrum, you have people whose priorities is getting in and getting through night. patti lee, channel 2 news. santa clara county is expanding its shelter hours due to the cold snap.

ehc life builder three locations will be open through the weekend and they are seeking donation of blankets, sock, towels and toiletries. some east bay resident mopped up after a watered main break of castro valley. that is where the water brain broke friday night. companies were making house calls helping homeowners recover. the water poured down a steep hillside and create a large sinkhole. east bay mud managed to turn off the water last night, but not before several houses were flooded. there is no word on what may have caused that water main to break. go to ktvu.com for an hour-by- hour forecast in the area that you live. just look for the weather link at top of our page. new developments tonight, merrill newman is finally back home after arriving at sportstime ohio, sfo san

francisco international airport. tired, but upbeat, newman is back after being released by the north korean government. the 85-year-old war veteran turned prisoner stepped off a jet in san francisco to end a 43-day long ordeal. ktvu's debora villalon is live in santa cruz with what newman had to say about his experience. >> reporter: it's all quiet after what you would expect after an exhausting day, merrill newman finely getting a night's sleep in his own bed. this picture shared by their son showed lee and merrill newman relaxing over a meal. they were reunited in morning at sfo where newman arrived nonstop from beijing. friends and onlookers aflawed as he strolled through the airport, his comments brief. >> good morning, i'm delighted to be home. >> reporter: the 85-year-old veteran thanked the

kenneth bae of washington state, north korea convicted him of criminals against the state and sentenced him to 15 years of hard labor. five people are without a home after a two-alarm fire in the east bay. it happened shortly after 4:00 in alameda. alameda fire officials say two unit were damaged by snoqualmie and flames. firefighters from oakland came in to help. there were no reports of injuries and no word on what started that fire. there is word tonight that major league baseball told the oakland a's months ago that they can't move to san josi. the san josi mercury news reports that the letter from commissioner bud selig to a's owner lou wolf was sent in june, but only revealed this weekend. dis closure came as part of an anti-trust lawsuit of san jose against the league. wolf said that the team is still trying to relocate to the south bay. it is the first public confirmation that major league

baseball opposes the a's moving to san josi. san francisco police chief greg suhr says there will be more undercover officers at the 49ers game against the seattle seahawks more than any other game. it's in response to fears that intense west coast rivalry could lead to violence in the stands or participants. some seattle fans are gone on- line asking if it's safe go to a game at candlestick park? a group of 49er fans have set up a crowd-funding site to raise money for a billboard form tomorrow's game. it shows five super bowl trophies with the title "how much do you have?" it's a clear jab at seahawks who have none. billboard would be in seattle near centurylink field where the seahawks play. the group needs to raise $7,000 for the billboards and so far they have raisedded $3,000. >> we have a friendly competition with our sister

the beacon atop mount diablo was lit earlier this evening to commemorate the attack at pearl harbor. it has been relit every pearl harbor day since the 1960s. this is the first year that the beacon has been hit since undergoing a major renovation. >> all of you who have

porsche crashed. the sheriff's office says the event is not sanctioned by the county and there are worries that the crowds will get too big and traffic will clog streets. >> a couple who never knew paul walker now wants the world to know about his generous spirit. kyle and kristen upham say in 2004 that are were shopping for an engagement ring. walker happened to be in the store at the same time. actor apparently overheard kyle talking about leaving for iraq soon and he couldn't afford the ring kristen had chosen. the couple left without the ring, but got a call from the salesclerk saying that the $9,000 ring was bought by an anonymous gifter. the jewelry store clerk confirmed it was walker after his death. it used to be a right of passage for most teenagers, but now fewer and fewer young people are choosing to get a driver's license. new research sews shows the number of young people without driver's licenses has increased from 21% in 2000 to 26% in

protesting against apartheid. >> growing up, we weren't allowed -- it's just always been to me that rebellious person who fought for us. >> tomorrow is the national day of prayer in south africa. on tuesday, president obama will attend the official public memorial service in johannesburg. mandela will be buried on december 15th in the village of qunu where he grew up. the remaining pilot whales that stranded on the coast of florida may have rescued themselves. on tuesday 51 whales were spotted either beach order in shallow water near the florida everglades. several whales died on the beach and others were euthanized, but most of the whales apparently swam up, making it to deeper water and safety. biologists say they don't know what caused the whales to come

. vallejo police detectives are working overtime this weekend trying to sol the latest in a string of killings in that city. three people have been shot to death in the past eight days. latest homicide was last night outside of a hip-hop concert. ktvu's alex savidge has more on the innocent victim and the department's limited resources.

>> he was like here. >> reporter: it was a disturbing sight for rodney davis, a woman hit by gunfire, down in front of his car. >> she wasn't move. >> reporter: police say the 34-year-old victim from oakland died in this parking lot. an innocent bystander, caught in the middle of a gunbattle that happened just before midnight in dan foley park. >> it could have been any one of my friends, any one of us. and it happened right by my car. >> reporter: davis was one of more than a 150 people who came to this vallejo cultural center for a hip-hop concert. ♪[ music ] >> rapper and reality tv star lil scrappy was scheduled to perform. although concert goers say he showed up late and never took the stage. organizers told the recreation department last night's concert was designed to raise money to buy toys for needy children. there were four security guards on-hand at the foley cultural

center, but vallejo police say they didn't know about this event. >> as far as i know, the vallejo police department was not notified and we would be looking into it. >> reporter: police weren't in the loop, but the head of the greater vallejo recreation district told me that the event was approved and proper procedures were followed. >> unfortunately when something like this happens you will go back and reevaluate. >> reporter: this was the third home in little than a week in the city and it's putting a strain on the small group of six detectives tasked with making arrests. >> we're always going to do the best we can what we have. needless to say we're stretch. alex savidge, ktvu channel 2 news. investigators say excessive speed and wet roads were likely the cause of a deadly accident in san josi overnight. ait happened on san tomas expressway near moorpark avenue. police say the drive was speeding when he lost control and crashed into a tree.

two lanes shut down while crews cleaned up the damage. there were no passengers and no one else was hurt. another day of freezing temperatures gripped the middle of the nation in texas along interstate 35, look at. this drivers were stuck in their vehicles for as long as 12 hours. big-rig drivers simply stopped right in the middle of the road, unable to navigate the icy roadways. to the east in memphis, conditions not much better. records were busy all day towing vehicles that lost traction. >> the ice -- people's cars aren't suited for and don't have tired that can handle it and they are slipping around on the roads. >> the storms knocked out power to thousands of customers from idaho to tennessee. dallas has been particularly hard hit by the weather. this passenger jet at love field was stuck in the ice after it landed. more than a thousand flights were canceled there on saturday at 21 degrees today, it was

colder in dallas than anchorage, alaska. the city's downtown hydrocarbon parade and marathon were canceled because of the freezing temperatures. record-low temperatures brought snow to the sierra foothills. reporter mallory hoff shows us how one city was transformed into i winter wonderland overnight. >> reporter: a blanket of snow in auburn, a rare aoccurrence at this level. >> it's surreal. >> reporter: overnight between 2-4" of snow fell, just in time for the city's annual festival of lights parade and this was the scene this afternoon -- yes, this is auburn and while the streets were cleared and dropping temperatures could potentially turn melted snow into ice. the parade chairman is urging caution on the drive home. >> we want them to be safe. we want them is to have a great time at the opening of the holiday season, but to be very careful. >> reporter: another potential problem in the next 24 hours. >> is there always a concern of power outage? >> this travel agent has a

. well, temperatures dropping off already rapidly this evening for the third time this week we're talking about freeze warnings in the bay area, with some neighborhoods back down into the 20s first thing tomorrow morning. here is a look at current numbers updated for the 10:00 hour. san francisco downtown, checking in at 40 degrees, but look at these neighbors up in the north bay, already down into the lower 30s and, in fact, santa rosa reporting 30 degrees and a few more reports to show you, up towards petaluma and windsor and healdsburg. you can see the state clearing out, but this last storm yesterday a very productive storm in terms of snow.

you can see the snow level measurements for kirkwood 3' of snow and heavenly valley just over 2', as far as the bay area chill, it is here once again for tonight and into tomorrow morning. as a result we're talking about some freeze warnings out there. sunday morning, 20s and 30s, with the recent rainfall, that could lead to some black ice. you want to be very careful first thing sunday morning with the cold temperatures and increased moisture on the roadways. as far as this freeze warning, sunday morning 2:00 lasting until 9:00 for everybody except san francisco and then we'll do it all once again sunday night at 10:00, lasting until mooned 9:00. we're going have a couple more mornings of at least subfreezing temperatures in the region. overnight lows tomorrow morning will be in the 20s. santa rosa, sonoma, napa, 24 degrees. you can basically same story for walnut creek and danville,

oakland near freezing and san josi, 32. santa cruz, 32 degrees and near the immediate coastline, upper 30s. san francisco 37 degrees to start ought the day. this area of low pressure drifting to the south, but basically opened the door for more cold air to push into the region. so the cold snap will linger and the dry weather pattern, but the cold weather pattern into monday and tuesday. it will be a slow gradual process to warm up the numbers. that freeze warning tomorrow morning. upper 30s to the lower 40s. by 1:00, 49ers play the big game for tomorrow at candlestick park at 1:25 for kickoff, mostly sunny and temperatures in the upper 40s at 48 degrees. so after the cold start, it will be brisk. afternoon highs only in the mid to upper 40s. we'll be lucky to make it to 50 degrees. san jose will go 49 and look ahead, your five-day forecast, with your weekend always in view, and ken, we're still

and tushed it on 69 years to the end zone. gaffney is just getting started as the cardinals jumped to the early lead, but the sun devils were known for their explosive officer as well. the game looking early like it could be a shoot-out. stanford answered back with a one-yard score and early in the 2nd quarter, montgomery got around the corner on an route and he knows what to do when the end zone is sight. a third gaffney score gave the cardinals the lead. asu with signs of life before halftime. foster gets both of the sun devils touchdown and it was 28-14 at halftime. second half was more of a defensive battle. the stanford defense stopping asu on a 4th and goal play. that in the final seconds of the 3rd quarter and in the 4th, kevin hogan from his own end
